In most games, each player’s hand is dealt to him or her in turn. During this period, players place bets or raises according to the rules of the game. When the round ends, all bets and raises are accumulated in the pot. The player with the best hand wins the pot. Players can win by making a bet that no other player calls, by having the highest ranking hand, or by bluffing.
To start, each player is dealt one card, sometimes two cards. Cards are dealt face up, but they can be dealt face down. A standard deck is used, but some players use a short deck. This is common in some countries, but not in others.

Depending on the poker version, cards are dealt in face-up or face-down rounds. Most modern poker is played with a standard deck of cards. Traditionally, a five-card hand was often dealt one card at a time. But a seven-card stud is now the most common. For a draw, the player must put up an ante before the draw.
